Ok, so here’s the thing. The world is a scary place right now. Hell, it’s probably always been a scary place in one way or another. It just seems like there’s a lot floating around right now to worry about, to be afraid of, to try to second-guess your way around. We’re all doing it, just trying to find our way through the morass. Worries are nibbling away at our foundations, and anxiety is high because of course it is. Donald Trump could conceivably become President of the United States in less than a year, and he’s not even the worst candidate for that job. No wonder people want to tune out and listen to John Denver music for the next twelve months. But today’s wisdom is telling us not to surrender to our fears. Do something today. Do anything. Get moving. Let yourself approach old roads and pathways with new eyes because you might have been missing things all this time that will serve you well now if you’re able to start seeing them. Think: beginner’s mind. Think: tabula rasa. Think: starting over is a good thing. Nurture the fire in your heart, your own inner sun, and don’t give in to fear.
Today’s draw provides a startling reminder that life and death are in a constant beautiful dance, and that we cannot have one without the other. Death happens, and it needs to happen so that what needs to come forth can be nourished into birth — because of course what dies feeds what comes to life. Death is as much a mothering as birth is, just in a different way. We Westerners tend to cling to life so fiercely because we’ve been taught to fear death as a form of punishment for evil-doing instead of the natural and honored part of the Universal cycle of existence it is. Face the day as your own beautiful, charming self, and do your best to be alive while you’re alive. Try to enjoy yourself more and worry less about the challenges and burdens of life. (I’m actually telling myself this as I’m saying it to you because it’s very hard for me to do too, so this isn’t me just preaching at ya — I’m preaching at us both. 😉 ) Solutions come from approaching things with beginner’s mind, getting away from preconceived notions and fears and just accepting things as they are.
So, yeah. He’s baaaaack. Actually, He never left. Odin is still here from yesterday’s reading, bringing in power and structure to the day’s proceedings and making sure that everything goes along according to plan. There are still jobs to do and plans to work out, but you’ve got strength and allies to get it all done (or, well, maybe not ALL of it but at least a good chunk of it). These plans and projects are geared up for the long-term, so think long-term. Don’t let yourself be blinded by immediate gratification. Push past that and think more about what you want and need for the long haul. Rely on friends and listen to their wisdom, especially if they’ve been in your corner for a long time. Rely on those who have proven themselves trustworthy. And for god’s sake don’t forget to give the dog a bone — no, seriously. Check out the photo. The Dog Bone charm fell right in front of Odin’s wolf, Who is laying at His feet gnawing on a bone. Bring offerings to the familiars of others, and don’t neglect the non-humans in your life.
Ok, yeah. Yesterday was full of the gentle but insistent Grandmother energy that nurtures but also consistently pulls one toward growth. Today, not so much. Today the Emperor is in play, the full-blast God Force that is taking none of your shit whatsoever. No whining will be allowed; there is either doing the thing or going home (and actually the going-home part is not even an option so don’t ask). So DO THE THING. Use your head, figure it out, and get it done. No corner-cutting, no easy-way-out; don’t even try it with these Powers. They represent the blazing, unflinching Eternal Eye that’s sort of like the Eye of Sauron only not evil. They watch and judge and exhort us to be our best, most ethical selves as we do what must be done in our lives — and They’re not asking us to do anything They haven’t done themselves, which is the core of ethical leadership. So focus, take a deep breath, and get it done.
Today is all about opportunities for self-expression and the authentic use of our creative faculties. Look for opportunities to share your particularly glorious brand of crazy goodness because god knows the world needs it. And if you don’t know what to do, get outside. Go for a walk, or if you can’t do that (because a lot of us have those kinds of jobs that don’t involve green space or any patch of environment), find a way to move around a bit. Find an empty cubicle and do some stretches. Put your earbuds on, crank those jams, and march in place. The idea is to get you moving. A new season has arrived (either spring or autumn, depending on where you live), and change is definitely afoot today. Get into the swing of it by literally getting into the swing of it. Make it uniquely your own, and keep your eyes open for new opportunities to let your freak flag fly! Be you, darlings.
Yeah, these two together can be dangerous: nothing like a demon ride down a dark highway at high speed with the headlights off to get the adrenaline going. But it’s all so unnecessary. You do need to get from Point A to Point B, it’s true. But your reasons for fear, for anxiety and upsetness require some closer examination. Are you letting your emotions run away with you? Who’s driving the car? Take a few deep breaths, get clear on what you need to do and why you’re doing it, and put the worry-mind firmy in the back seat where it belongs. Take charge of your motivations and go for it!
Today is Imbolc, a sacred midwinter festival of fire and the stirrings of new life, a foreshadowing of Spring to come. In honor of Brigid, the Holy Mother of Ireland and great goddess of fire and water, today’s daily draw is “The Candle and the Well,” the light we carry before us in the darkness and the source of our creativity. Our Candle is the Five of Cups, a card of sorrow but also of moving on. The wisdom here is to keep moving forward no matter what emotional waves are crashing around you. You can’t see the tendrils of life weaving their tiny newborn way around you yet, and that’s ok. It’s a time of unknowing, uncertainty about the future, and unawareness of where we stand among gods and men. Nevertheless we’re called to keep moving. Record the sorrows (and the joys), and bring them out to be heard and acknowledged. Let yourself write a sad song or poem, or make drawings that symbolize the losses you’ve suffered in your life. The Well is the Knight of Pentacles, the slowest-moving of the Knights but the one who most fiercely works to get things done. Direct your energies toward solutions because you have a deep well of them. Use your creative passions to work out how to use your immense talents, and let those swords become plowshares because plowshares are much more useful right now. Dig deep, and don’t give up. Listen for the voice of Brigid on the wind; She’s whispering power words to help you heal, prepare, and thrive.
